Finding a mediator who is experienced and skilled at mediating divorces as a neutral is critical to the success and long term satisfaction with your mediation. There are different styles of mediation and it is important to understand the approach and style a mediator will use if working with you in your divorce. So how do you find the “right” mediator for your case?
Get started by:
1. Asking your therapist, friends, relatives and other professionals for referrals.
If a mediator’s name keeps coming up, contact him or her first – she might be the mediator for you. If, on the other hand, you don’t receive any referrals, use the Internet to continue your search for a mediator.
2. Using online referral lists and search services:
- Association for Conflict Resolution (acrnet.org)
- Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services (JAMS) (jamsadr.com)
- Mediate.com
3. Contacting a community mediation center in your area
A variety of community mediation programs are available, however, take care to ensure that the mediators are very experienced with divorce mediation as the issues are usually ore complex than the average person assumes.
Contact and interview at least 3 mediators before hiring one.
